Crushed

2024
In collaboration with Tzlil Lotem

Acrylic painting on cotton canvas depicts a chaotic mix of smashed watermelons and torn anemones in pools of blood. The watermelons and anemones are so interwoven that distinguishing between them becomes challenging.

The watermelons symbolize the Palestinian people, the mass killings that have occurred, and the genocide that has been put forth by the Israeli regime. The watermelon - a symbol that emerged due to the ban by Israeli authorities on carrying Palestinian flags -  has led in recent years to the boycott of signs and arrests during protests in Israel and in the Palestinian Territories.
The anemones represent the mostly Jewish residents of the Gaza Envelope, an area known for its mass poppy and anemone blooms during springtime. These regions and their inhabitants have been severely impacted by the Hamas attack on October 7, leading to hundreds of deaths and civilian kidnapping.

The work portrays a state of pain, loss, and severe death affecting both the Palestinian and Israeli populations. It invites viewers to consider the state of loss and mourning on the regional, communal, and personal levels. The concept of the work is to challenge the binary nature of the public discourse surrounding the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in general and the current war in particular. We aim to deepen the perspective and offer a complex narrative of political and personal pain, loss, and mourning, proposing that there is a shared experience of these emotions between the two peoples.
