Turn Our Sorrow Into Hope

Turn Our Sorrow Into Hope

2025
In collaboration with Tzlil Lotem

Barak and Lotem approach their practice through the principle of creation as resistance. Their collaborative work began in the streets during protests five years ago, and they continue to place uncompromising political statements at the forefront of their art. For them, the creative space is both personal and collective—an arena to express resistance and to invite diverse audiences to connect.

This series consists of three necklaces: one made of mirrored perspex, two of cardboard. The reflective surface of the perspex compels viewers to pause in order to read the text, confronting both their own image and the collective crowd reflected upon the wearer. The cardboard pieces recall the street—the birthplace of the duo’s practice—using an immediate, inexpensive material to emphasize accessibility and direct engagement.

Texts such as “Change our fields of thorns into meadows of flowers” and “Transform our graves into gardens” embody the duo’s belief in art as a call to action. Their work demands recognition of pain on both sides of the Israeli–Palestinian conflict while insisting on hope, transformation, and the possibility of building a different future.

Materials: Perspex, cardboard, aluminum carabiner, glue.
